Mr. Makhan Lal Bal

Late Mr. Makhan Lal Bal

9-May-2024

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mr. Makhan Lal Bal informs you that he passed away on the morning of May 9th, 2024, at the age of 90.
Makhan Bal was a life member of the Hindu Society of Manitoba and was one of the founding members of Bichitra, the Bengali Association of Manitoba. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who have known him for so many decades.
Makhan Bal was born in Barisal, East Bengal (now Bangladesh). Due to the political turmoil in East Bengal, his father brought his entire family to India. He lived through the engineered Bengal famine and the forced partition of Bengal and India.
Growing up in India during this time was quite difficult. His father passed away when he was a young man, and he became the sole breadwinner of the family. He had to look after his two younger brothers, one sister and his Ma.
Makhan Bal joined the military where he received training and Certification in Design and Draftsmanship.
A combination of his deep religious conviction combined with his training equipped him with discipline and the skills that lead to a job with the Tata Company in Jamshedpur, India. This education and work experience enabled him to migrate to Winnipeg in 1969, where he found a job that was fulfilling. Within a year he bought a house and arranged for his family of three to join him. Shortly after that, Makhan Bal was blessed with the birth of his youngest son. Later, his mother-in-law joined the family in Winnipeg.
Makhan Bal spent 55 years in Winnipeg. He contributed whole heartedly to Bichitra and the Hindu Temple. He was known for his golden heart and was beloved by many in the community. Makhan Bal was a strong believer in culture and religious traditions and was fluent in reading, writing and speaking Bengali and Sanskrit. He was persistent in understanding the deeper meanings behinds mantras and rituals. He and his wife performed the Chandi with friends for many years during Mahalaya. Throughout his life, Makhan Bal was passionate about music, books, drama, puja, travelling and food. He loved to go fishing and was an avid gardener. Most of all he was a devoted family man. All these brought him great joy and fulfillment.
Makhan Bal is predeceased by his father, mother and one brother.
He is survived in Winnipeg by his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and his two sons who will forever cherish his memory. In India, he is survived by his sister, brother and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home & Cemetery, 1291 McGillvary Boulevard on Sunday, May 19th, 2024, from 2:00p.m. to 3:00p.m.
In loving memory of Makhan Lal Bal, the family kindly request that, in lieu of flowers and condolence cards, donations be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
He was a passionate supporter of the work by the Foundation, and it would be a fitting tribute to his memory. Your generosity will help continue the fight against heart disease and stroke, causes close to his heart.
The family thanks you for your support during this difficult time.
